What is biodynamic craniosacral therapy?

Updated: Feb 8, 2022

Biodynamic means “working with nature”. Nature always knows best.

In biodynamic craniosacral therapy (BCST) the word has the same meaning. The biodynamic approach connects to the health that is always present in every client no matter what dis-ease they are experiencing. BCST honours the connections and relationships that exist in the body and appreciates how each part affects the whole system. This makes it a powerful and uplifting form of healing as the client becomes more embodied and connected to their own health. Rather than focusing on the parts of the body that are “going wrong”, being able to sense your health at work in your body can be profound and can offer a change in perspective on your situation.

Biodynamic craniosacral therapy (BCST) is safe and gentle. It is a hands-on therapy that uses light touch with a process of listening to the client’s body. This encourages a reorganizing or releasing of constrictive patterns in the tissues and emotional body, inviting the health that is present in us all. In listening to the body, like a mirror, we reflect back to how it is being held. In this way the body can ‘see’ what is happening and reorient to health. There is acknowledgement of how the body is, with an invitation to change. This therapy supports the body to spontaneously reorganise those systems which are out of balance.

Craniosacral work has its roots in osteopathy and so believes that the body is capable of self-healing when enough resources are present. In a session most clients can feel parts of their body adjusting from within as their body’s intelligence decides which parts need releasing or rebalancing. As a practitioner it is inspiring to feel the forces of nature at work. These are the forces of nature that we grew ourselves with and now the ones that repair us.

In daily life, everyone copes with many levels of stress and trauma. Our ability to function optimally may be compromised as we are challenged to maintain health. Often, this leads to distress, discomfort and disease. BCST assists the body's healing intelligence in restoring health and balance. Clients report a gentle, natural release of stress and trauma, resolution of chronic issues, promotion of injury recovery, and an overall sense of well-being.

The practitioner’s role is to create a space of that allows a journey into the body and supports the body's intelligence being able to communicate, shift, and reflect what is needed for more connection and balance. This type of presence and touch enables the receiver to become more self-aware. This supported and comfortable space allows the brain to switch from flight or fight to rest and repair. It is in this state that healing and change can begin to take place.

BCST allows us to access our internal intelligence and health in order to find balance and healing from deep within. It has the capacity to go beyond a focus on symptoms and basic health maintenance to connect with our body’s fundamental ability to heal. The therapy supports the client’s underlying health and accelerate the process of self-correction at the root level. The heart of the therapeutic processes is how to return the body to a greater relationship to this inherent health. The craniosacral therapy practitioner essentially encourages the body to release restrictions that it has been unable to overcome on its own. Rather than deciding how these changes should be made, the therapist follows the body's response as to how to proceed. Sessions are client led and not practitioner led. The client’s body will reveal what is the priority and directs pace of the session. The practitioner listens with respect. The client’s body will not reveal anything it doesn’t want to.

Since BCST works with the underlying causes of disorder by engaging the greater primary intelligence of the system, the positive effects experienced by clients are as varied as the clients themselves.

Recipients have gained relief from many issues including structural problems (such as headaches and back pain), injuries, chronic pain, hormonal imbalance, and sleep disorders. In addition, clients report benefits in the areas of trauma recovery, mental struggle, emotional turmoil, and spiritual angst.

Since the process of the modality is the subtle balancing of the entire system, BCST can be beneficial for many conditions. It can facilitate the following:

• aid the resolution of physical dysfunction

• increase the speed of recovery

• bring a feeling of overall wellness

• aid deep healing on emotional and psychological levels

• facilitate deep relaxation

• open us up to layers of ourselves that remain covered in normal states of awareness.
